Fairport Containers Ltd is part of the Fairport Holdings Group of companies, which also includes Fairport Construction Equipment, Fairport Garages, Fairport Storage and Fairport Properties.
Fairport Containers was formed in 1993 and is celebrating its 20th year in business during 2013. The company was part of the Fairport Engineering Group which was formed in 1982 by the founder, John Porter, who headed up a management team and bought a part of the Leonard Fairclough Group. The company name takes "Fair" from Fairclough and "Port" from Porter. It originally carried out structural steelwork and project engineering for the coal mining industry and later for the cement and quarrying industries.
A family affair
In 1992 Andrew Porter, son of founder John, who already had his own logistics company, joined the Fairport Group. In 1993 Biffa Waste Services were going out to tender to refurbish its waste containers and Andrew Porter and the Fairport team were successful in obtaining the contract using their engineering and logistics experience.
Fairport Containers Ltd commenced its refurbishment operations from a relatively small part of its 150,000 sq ft, eight-acre site in Adlington, Lancashire and has now expanded into the majority of the site. Since launching with Biffa as its main client, it has grown and developed its customer base, carrying out refurbishment and modifications for other leading lights within the waste disposal industry such as Veolia, Sita, Viridor, D S Smith, Severn Waste, various local authorities and many other private waste operators.
Fairport Containers is run by Managing Director, Steve Collinson, who has been with the Fairport Group since its formation in 1982 and since Fairport Containers Ltd formation in 1993. Steve has worked his way up from the shop floor, where he joined at the age of 16, to General Manager to his current role of Managing Director which he has held since 2007.
In 2007 the company further expanded its operations with a depot in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire and in 2008 commenced its mobile repair service. In addition to refurbishment, the company carries out re-modelling to all types of waste containers and purchases, remodels and re-sells containers. The company, through its sister company, operates its own transport fleet of 45ft articulated vehicles and Moffett mounted fork lift trucks to load, unload and site the containers.
The Fairport Group is still owned by the Porter family today, with Andrew's son David being the latest member to join the team. In addition to the waste container and refurbishment business it also manufactures construction equipment and flexible drive and carries out commercial vehicle repairs, as well as logistic and storage services via its sister company, Andrew Porter UK Ltd.
